It might sound a little funny, but I successfully removed my HDD cover with the assist of a spatula. I'd suggest doing the same, just be very cautious. It didn't break my cover, in case you're wondering. Just try harder, you need to be really fucking rough with the cover for some reason. It shouldn't break unless you have hulk strength.
Cleaning and reapplying thermal paster should not take longer than 30 to 40 minutes and it can work wonders. Also, make sure your PS3 is being used in a propper environment also, make sure your PS3 has at least 6 to 8 inches of free space around it in all sides.
